Who Are the Preachers?
Bob Bickle

Romans 10: 13-17

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Several questions are asked in the above scriptures. It's important that we seek to find the answers.

1. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
Answer: No one can.

2. How shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
Answer: No one can.

3. How shall they hear Without a preacher?
Answer: They can't.

4. How shall they preach without a preacher?
Answer: They can't.

Since the answers to the above questions are so obvious, what is the answer to the question, "Who are the preachers?" Some of our brethren will answer, "They are those who are trained in preacher training schools or Christian colleges and have decided to give their lives in full service to our Lord." This is certainly true, but it's not the complete answer.

In Acts 8, a great persecution against the church is recorded. It's also stated that they (the Christians) were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria (Acts 8: 1). In Acts 8:4 it's discovered that they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. What about the trained preachers, where were they? In Acts 8:1 it's learned that they remained in Jerusalem.

Who are the preachers in Romans 10? Could it not be Christians who had a simple message to share - the saving gospel of Jesus Christ? Why isn't the church growing faster and making an impact into their communities? Maybe it's because they have forgotten who the preachers are.
