Volume XXII - Number 13

Religion but Not Righteousness
Charles Hodge

People seem to be more interested in being religious than in being righteous – religion and righteousness should go hand in hand. Perhaps this is why James added "pure" to religion when he offered religion as righteousness.

Again, man is instinctively religious. He has this in his soul. But this is not the religion that saves. Actually, instinct and real religion are two different things. But again – our lesson. A sister said, "My religion would not allow me to divorce from my husband." But her religion did not prompt her to be a sweet wife and work at having a good marriage. She had religion but not righteousness.

And this is primarily our trouble. We have religion enough to want our name on the church roll. We will go to much trouble to get our "membership" somewhere, but we have not the righteousness to show responsible duty and dedication. We have enough religion not to shoot anybody, but not enough righteousness to keep our big mouths shut, and to forgive and forget. We have enough religion to argue who's right – but not enough righteousness to teach a Bible study to help save a man's soul. We have enough religion to know that giving is part of one's duty, but not enough righteousness to give liberally, regularly, and lovingly. We know enough about religion to attend once a week but not enough righteousness to attend all gatherings of the saints.

Perhaps our trouble is religion. Jesus said, "hunger and thirst" for righteousness, but not religion. Perhaps we are offering God religion but not righteousness.
