Volume XXII - Number 14

Do You Have a Golden Calf?
Howard Johnson

". . . the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; . . . and Aaron said unto them, break off the golden earrings ... and he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf" (Exodus 32:1-4).

T he people of Israel grew inpatient waiting on the return of Moses from his commune with God in the mount. While waiting, some thought it necessary to make gods (graven images) to precede them and protect them in Moses' absence. Because of their lack of faith in the return of Moses to deliver them out of the wilderness they called on 'gods' to help deliver them. And as a result, God slayed many that day for their disobedience and idolatry. God left these examples of disobedience in the Old Testament so that ensuing generations might look upon them and not do the same thing. These events were written as an example for us (1 Corinthians 10-11).

In times of trouble, when it seems that all is lost, don't resort to the "golden calves" (gods) of today. Don't fall into the trap of impatience while waiting for God to bail you out or help you in special trials. Our God is ever present (Jeremiah 23:23,24). "And for those that love Him all things work together for good" (Romans 8:28). "And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Acts 2:21). ❦
