If
We Pray The Disciples Prayer
Open your Bible to the book of Matthew the sixth
chapter, and you will find the "model prayer." This is
the way Jesus taught His disciples to pray. The pattern for prayer
will be found in verses 9-13. Pay close attention to the last phrase
in that prayer, "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and
the glory, forever."
What kind of people would we be if indeed these
principles governed our lives? Take a moment to look.
Wouldn't We Be Controlled by the Will of God?
That would surely be the case if we prayed "thine
is the kingdom." That would mean his will was in control. Even
before these words, one finds the phrase, "thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven." One would not pray for his will
to be done and at the same time not be controlled by that will.
Yes, praying that prayer would bring our wills into conformity to
His will.
Wouldn't He Have Confidence in the Power of
God?
As we say, "thine is the power," we
would surely be expressing great confidence in His authority and
power. He thus tells one to go into all the world; one could go
with great confidence. We would know that he was backed by authority
that would supersede any other authority on earth. This would challenge
us to meet any foe and be faithful under any circumstances where
his marching orders sent us. Wasn't this the kind of thing that
caused the apostles to say, "we ought to obey God rather than
man?"
Wouldn't We Have Great Concern for the Glory
of God?
Isn't it typical of the child to want to see
his father honored? Isn't this the reason that many times children
will restrain themselves less they bring shame upon their fathers
and mothers? This becomes a powerful motive for one to live as he
ought. He will want all men everywhere to honor the name of God.
When our Lord was on this earth, he was very
concerned about glory being given to His Father. This is obvious
from the teaching of this prayer. Later in a prayer He prayed, He
is heard saying,
"glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may
glorify thee." (John 17: 1)
Yes, Jesus was very concerned for the glory and
honor that was and is due God.
The principles incorporated in this prayer would
help us to be better and more noble people as we live by the highest
motives and challenges faced by man.
