Out west, a few years back, someone
erected a religious sign. It was a simple thing with only two
words printed in bold black
letters. The sign read: "Try God". The sign wasn't
up long, however; before someone had scribbled below it this
question: "On what charge?"
If you think that's funny, consider the man in California a
few years back who actually tried to sue God for a storm that
had caused him to suffer uninsured loss. The judge threw the
case out of court saying the sheriffs office was unable to bring
the defendant to court.
For centuries, people have tried to call
God into question for one thing or another. With Jehovah, many
play the game of "whys". "Why
did God make me like this?" (Romans 9:20). "Why would
God make me look upon evil?" (Habakkuk 1:3). "Why would
a good God make me suffer like I do?" (Job 23:1-7). And
yet the maddening thing is that, like the California man, they
can't get God into the courtroom.
The sovereignty of God is a hard lesson for us to learn, but
it is true; God moves and acts on his own authority. He does
what he pleases when he pleases. He refuses to stoop to the curiosity
of mortal men. He will not explain nor apologize for his actions,
and he will not be brought up on our charges.
He answers our storming and our questions
with only one reply: "The
just shall live by faith" (Habakkuk 2:4). God is working
out His design, if we understand it or if we don't. If we like
it or not, He is working out things for our good. We can rest
ourselves in that. So even if we don't understand the brush strokes
going on the Canvas, let us trust ourselves to a God who knows
the whole picture.
