Volume XXIV - Number 50

Parents "On Strike!"
Steve Higginbotham

When I thought I'd seen everything, along comes a two parents in Deltona, Florida who have gone on "strike" as parents. They say they're fed up with the behavior and lack of respect their children show them, so until they "shape up" these parents are going to boycott their responsibilities as parents, leave their 17 year-old son and 12 year-old daughter in the house to fend for themselves while they live outside on the front lawn in a tent.

Is this not incredulous? Even my 12 year-old son, while watching this story on “Parents “On Strike” (Continued From Page One)

the evening news, had the insight to say, "Who's being punished here? Why would the mom and dad live in a tent and leave the comfort of the house to the kids?" -- Good question.

Friends, parenting is not something we can decide to take seriously when our children are in their teens. That will be too late. Respect for parental authority, if it is not established in early childhood will be very difficult to establish when a child is in his teens. Neither is parenting something that we can abdicate and go on "strike" because we've not trained our children to respect our authority. Parenting requires consistent discipline that begins at birth.

These parents don't need to go on "strike," rather to me it sounds like a "strike" or two should have been applied to their children many years ago. What do you think? ?

You Can Help !!
The Haitian congregation in conjunction with the Hilltop congregation are collecting supplies to send a container to Gonaive, Haiti. This container is to be mailed December 18. There is a list on the bulletin board of items to send (non-perishable foods, canned and packaged, i.e., rice, beans, etc., both adult and children clothing, diapers, baby food, formula, juices, etc. Toys can also be included in this), and there are boxes in Assembly Room “B” to place items in.

NOTE: Our pantry is also in need of non-perishable foods and personal hygiene items.

2005 Duty Schedules
There is only a short period of time left to insure that the 2005 duty schedules posted in the foyer are compatible with you and your plans for the coming year. Take a minute to look it over and make any necessary changes on the sheet.

Before you quit! "Quitters never win and winners never quit"! Show me a man or woman who is a real achiever and I will show you someone who has refused to quit when the hurdles were high and the head winds were strong. The easy way to "overcome" problems is to drop out. It is also the wrong way. The only time we should be willing to quit is when we are doing something wrong.
