weekly bulletin of the River Road church of Christ in New Port

You may remember Professor
Antony Flew. He is the legendary British philosopher and atheist
who met
our own brother Thomas
Warren in a debate on the existence of God back in 1976. Mr.
Flew is the son of a Methodist minister and became an atheist
at age 15. Now at 81, Flew says he believes in God. This is not
in the full and complete way that we believe in God, but he now
acknowledges "intelligent design" as a guiding force
in the way the universe came into existence. Flew still accepts
Darwin’s theory of evolution but he doubts that this can
explain the ultimate origins of life.
In a new video, “Has Science Discovered God?” Flew
says, “biologists' investigation of DNA has shown, by the
almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are
needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved.” This
is what believers in the Bible have said for years. In scientific
terms it is called the Cosmological Argument. This logically
says that order and design call for a designer. Flew has often
contended that the debate over God must begin by presuming atheism
is true, putting the burden of proof on those who argue that
God exists. He did not realize that the universe speaks loud
and clear; bringing its own proof for the existence of God (Psalm “Breaking
News” (continued from page 1)
19:1-3). The almighty
God is the first cause of all causes. He is the designer of
the entire universe
(Genesis 1 & 2;
Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:1-2; John 1:1-3).
Dr. Flew said. “My whole life has been guided by the principle
of following the evidence, wherever it leads.” We are happy
that this famous atheist has not only found the evidence leading
to God (cf. Romans 1:19-20), but that he also has the courage
to stand and proclaim it. Unfortunately some are now saying that
if Dr. Flew does not renounce this whole thing as nonsense, that
he will be discredited by his atheistic colleagues saying that
his statements were due to senility and memory loss.
To profess belief in a higher intelligence, in whatever form
one may believe that being to be, is a giant step for an atheist
to make. At the same time Dr. Flew has a long way to go in his
journey to salvation.
