Volume XXIV - Number 22

"Keep Company With Good Men and Good Men You Will Imitate"

Ever notice how much trouble you get into or stay out of dependent upon who you are with? That is not a coincidence. I found out early in life that in order to keep on the right path I need to surround myself with people wanting to be on the right path. The fact of the matter is this truth never changes. You can turn to any fortune 500 business person and it is evident who they spent their time with. You can also turn your Bible to the life of Christ. He spent his time ministering to those of different goals, but in order to get encouraged He turned to His Father and His twelve. Above any other example, may we notice His. To surround ourselves with those who want to make it to heaven and to spend lots of time with God asking for directions. "As iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend" (Proverbs 27:17).

Gene Carrol said, "I want to get up each morning grateful that I am able to get up, for many cannot get out of their beds. I want to offer thanks for my daily bread, for many have no bread for which to be thankful. I want to go off to my work with a cheerful heart, for multitudes of people have no work I want to be thankful for my family, for many have no families. I want to live my life under the realization that I shall some day go to heaven, for most people of this world will not go there."

Just counting the blessings I have fills my heart to overflowing gratitude. After all, is it not true:

• I have received more than most people. All around the world, there are millions who would gladly live on the trash I throw away

• I have received more than I expected. Who could ever have guessed what luxury I would enjoy at this time of my life? God has filled my heart with food and gladness.

• I have received more than I deserve. Why should it be me who was born in America? Why should I be blessed with being a Christian? What providence made me live in a land of peace and prosperity? Why should I have heard the gospel? Why am I not in darkness like millions of others?

• I have received more than I can repay So with what bounty could I ever repay the Lord for loving me? What good can I do for others to acknowledge the good done for me? It will demand my whole life, but I am glad to try.

Praise the Lord for His wonderful gifts! I've never made a fortune, And Ill never make one now. But it really doesn't matter, ‘cause I'm happy anyhow.

Many of us become involved in so many responsibilities and affairs of life that we have no time to give to the worship of God; no time to study and meditate; no time for anything but "making a living". We just can't take time off from our regular routine. Yes, you can...., and furthermore, –you will– permanently. And the world will go right on without those who thought they just had to attend to other matters before they met their obligations to God.
