Volume XXVI - Number 28

"An Inconvenient Truth"
Steve Vice

An article in the Reuters Foundation website, written by Gerard Wynn and Alister Doyle, states:

PARIS, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Mankind is to blame for global warming, the world's top climate scientists said on Friday, sending governments a "crystal clear" warning they must take urgent action to avert damage that could last centuries.

A website for the movie An Inconvenient Truth, with former Vice President Al Gore, states:

Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and temperatures are rising. The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it's already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable.

We're already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts are increasing .

• The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes have almost doubled in the last 30 years.
• Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level.
• The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled over the past decade.
• At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles.
• If the warming continues, we can expect catastrophic consequences.
• Deaths from global warming will double in just 25 years -- to 300,000 people a year.
• Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide.
• Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense.
• Droughts and wildfires will occur more often.
• The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in the summer by 2050.
• More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050.

A recent News is Now Public website headline read, "2,500 Scientists Agree that Global Warming is Caused by Humans."

"Is it a natural occurring event?", "Is it man-made?", "Is it really happening at all?" The debate rages on among people about global warming.

Some see this as simply politics. Others as a sign of the great tribulation and the end of times. Others see it as an opportunity to play upon the emotions of people to persuade them to send money to help their "cause." But what is the truth of the matter? The truth is that God is still in control of this old world (Acts 17:24). Jesus, the one who calmed the winds and the sea (Mark 4:39), is still the one who has all power in heaven and on the earth (Matthew 28: 18).

After the flood waters dried up from the earth, in Genesis 8, God spoke to himself saying, “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease" (Genesis 8:22, emphasis added, sv). That is God's truth of the matter. For some this is indeed an inconvenient truth. But for me it is blessed assurance knowing that God's hand is on the thermostat.

Many years ago, Elbert Hubbard stated. "People who take pains never to do any more than they get paid for, never get paid for any more than they do." In all departments of activity: To have one thing to do, do it, then look for more, is the secret of success. It is well to convince yourself that positive something is better than negative nothing.
